Laura’s Review of Tears of Tess (Monsters in the Dark, #1) by Pepper Winters

If you read Captive in the Dark (The Dark Duet, #1) by C.J. Roberts, Consequences (Consequences, #1) by Aleatha Romig, and Madeleine Abducted (The Estate, #1) by M.S. Willis

Basic Summary
A New Adult Dark Contemporary Romance, not suitable for people sensitive to grief, slavery, and nonconsensual sex.  A story about finding love in the strangest of places, a will of iron that grows from necessity, and forgiveness that may not be enough.

“My life was complete.  Happy, content, everything neat and perfect.  Then it all change.  I was sold”

Tess Snow has everything she ever wanted: one more semester before a career in property development, a loving boyfriend, and a future dazzling bright with possibility.  For their two year anniversary, Brax surprises Tess with a romantic trip to Mexico.  Sandy beaches, delicious cocktails, and soul-connecting sex set the mood for a wonderful holiday.  With a full heart, and looking forward to a passion filled week, Tess is on top of the world.

But lusty paradise is shattered. Kidnapped. Drugged. Stolen.  Tess is forced into a world full of darkness and terror. Captive and alone with no savior, no lover, no faith, no future.  Tess evolves from terrified girl to fierce fighter.  But no matter her strength, it can’t save her from the horror of being sold.

Can Brax find Tess before she’s broken and ruined, or will Tess’s new owner change her life forever?

What I loved
I just love dark romances so much and this one didn't disappoint, bring on the violence and the heart break please!  I normally don’t always like the way Aussie authors write and that’s on me not them but I really liked this book a lot.  The details in this book were amazing when Tess describes the grandeur of Q’s house.  When she first walks up to the house you really get a sense of overwhelming because how can she stand up to a man who owns all this?  The details about how Tess and Q looked, their mood swings, the environment around them was just phenomenal it made this story so much more real.  I truly didn't know what would happen next at so many points in this story and I love books that can keep me guessing.

Usually I don’t like the constant back and forth in a character’s mind because it hinders their ultimate development through the story but I didn't mind Tess’ at all.  To me hers seemed more human and organic than annoying.  I think for any human being to be in a kind of situation where you are forced to change there’s times of confusion and backsliding through that transition and I feel like Pepper Winters captured that beautifully.  When Tess is trying to decide what she wants versus what she used to settle for you see that internal struggle constantly in this book and to me that made Tess more relatable and more human.  I never felt like this book had robotic type characters that are unrelatable.  Even though this is a story that is difficult to wrap your head around, it’s hard to wrap your head around being kidnapped let alone being sold as if you are an object not a person I still was drawn into this book almost immediately and couldn't put it down.

Not So Much
What I look for in books is that the characters in the stories seem like actual humans to me and one of the characteristics that makes these fictional people come across as real is organic change.  I felt like Tess’ character change was not organic at all, it almost seemed robotic.  Change should be gradual and seem natural that it just kind of happens and then all of the sudden one day the character realizes he or she has changed for the better.  To me Tess went from being on way and then another in a matter of a paragraph.  She shouldn't have to say well now I am a survivor and ruthless but I used to be passive and quiet, that should just be shown not stated.  Part of the journey of a character is seeing them develop not them just telling you they are.

Also I've never criticized a book summary before but I’m going to do that now.  The book summary is great but it only pertains to about the first 20% of the book, it doesn't even touch about all the other stuff that goes on and the other main character in the book.  I at first thought from reading the summary and this being a series that there would be more of Tess and Brax before she was kidnapped and the second book might go more into being sold but that is not what happened at all which I am pleasantly surprised about but the book summary leads you astray .  The book summary should at least mention Q since he truly is the other main character he should be talked about in the book summary.

Overall

I really enjoyed reading this book it was such a great dark romance story.  There were truly so many times in this book that I was completely taken by surprise or just wouldn't know where this book would go, and I love not knowing what’s going to happen next.  The writing for me was right on point and I was pleasantly surprised I enjoyed the way this author wrote.  There were tons of details as well as far Q’s house and Tess’ wardrobe and the opulence that basically dripped from the walls of this huge mansion that Tess found herself in.  I would've liked to have seen those details carried through when describing Tess’ and Brax’s apartment because I felt like the details were right on point in that part of the book but when the parts of the book that took place in Australia weren't as detailed rather kind of glossed over.  This is definitely a series I can see myself getting into and I can’t wait to get to Quintessentially Q, having the epilogue from his point of view is a nice way to transition to the next book and I appreciate that.  I wish this book kind of got more into Q’s past, his work, and his interactions with the outside world but I am hoping to see more of that in this next book.  I loved the emotional journey I went through reading this book when Tess’ heart was breaking mine was too, when she was angry I got mad, when she happy I smiled and I loved that! I also really liked the playlist at the back of the book I actually thought of some of those songs when I was reading the book so it nice to see I wasn't the only one thinking of those songs.
