Lauren's Review of Tears of Tess (Monsters in the Dark #1) by Pepper Winters

Summary:  An Adult Dark Contemporary Romance, not suitable for people sensitive to grief, slavery, and nonconsensual sex. A story about finding love in the strangest of places, a will of iron that grows from necessity, and forgiveness that may not be enough.

“My life was complete. Happy, content, everything neat and perfect.

Then it all changed.
I was sold.”

Tess Snow has everything she ever wanted: one more semester before a career in property development, a loving boyfriend, and a future dazzling bright with possibility.
For their two year anniversary, Brax surprises Tess with a romantic trip to Mexico. But lusty paradise is shattered. Kidnapped. Drugged. Stolen. Tess is forced into a world full of darkness and terror.  Captive and alone with no savior, no lover, no faith, no future, Tess evolves from terrified girl to fierce fighter. But no matter her strength, it can’t save her from the horror of being sold. Can Brax find Tess before she’s broken and ruined, or will Tess’s new owner change her life forever?

Rating: 5 Dark and Steamy Stars

What I Loved: LOVED LOVED LOVED this book! I guess it is safe to say that I am a lover of dark romances.  This book has been on the top of my TBR list for awhile now and I finally got to it and I adored every moment of it.  If you appreciate a book that will take you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions, you need to pick up this book.  Obviously, if you are conservative in any way shape or form, I do not recommend this book for you.  Pepper Winters pushes the envelope and makes you feel so dirty reading something that you feel you shouldn’t derive pleasure from but you do.  It is very well written and the sex is taboo and downright HOT.

Tess right from the start, we are thrown into the life of Tess and we get to know so much about her.  Her honesty and what she reveals about her inner self made me an instant fan.  I like to think if I was kidnapped, I would have the strength and determination to fight the way that Tess Snow does.  “You want to rape me, you bastard?” My voice wavered with tears and violence. “Come and get me.”  I think I would rather chose to fight and risk the consequences then sit back and let my kidnappers decide my faith for me.

There is plenty of drama when it comes to Q.  I had a love/hate relationship with Q because there is so much of him that is left a mystery and we do get a small dose in the epilogue from his POV but I am a bit confused by him.  I still have some unanswered questions that I am hoping will be answered in the next book.  But wow, some of the things that man says really get my juices flowing!

Not so Much: Without trying to give too much of the story away, there are certain parts that left me confused; mainly Q’s behavior.  And while I am a fan of dark reads, I could have done without the blood play.
Next on my TBR List: Quintessentially Q (Monsters in the Dark #2) by Pepper Winters
