Excerpt
And there we saw the sunset.

My mouth dropped open as a blaze of red and orange burned the sky, setting the mesa alight in an astonishing display of nature or God or some deity more powerful, older, more mesmerizing than anything I had seen.

I think I gasped, and clutched Cody’s arm, our silence more meaningful than any words could have been. A deep stillness filled me as I watched the cycle of day to night, as the earth turned. And I was part of it; together we were part of it. My problems seemed small and ridiculous and I promised myself that this was where my life started again: this day, this moment, with this man at my side—if he’d have me.

Meet Jane Harvey-Berrick

I started writing contemporary romance two years ago. Before that, I didn’t think I could write a sex scene. Turns out I can!
My lucky number is 13 because I was born on the 13th and live near a haunted castle by the ocean. My number one past-time is watching hot surfers get changed into (and out of) their wetsuits.
My husband doesn’t read my books.  My mother does.
Writing is my love, my hobby, my total addiction. All my characters are important to me and whisper their stories, even when I’ve finished writing their books. That’s why you’ll often find bonus chapters/out-takes from various books, because those voices just won’t be quiet.

Laura’s Review of Playing in the Rain by Jane Harvey-Berrick

If you have read and enjoyed Broken Wings by Erika Ashby, All I Ever Wanted by Kristan Higgens, and Summer Rental by Mary Kay Andrews, then you will LOVE this book!

The Rundown
Ava Lawton can’t believe her run of bad luck. It’s supposed to be an exciting time in her life: fresh out of college, living in a new state, with a new job, and away from her family at last.

But when she’s forced to quit her job, everything falls apart quickly. Suddenly, she’s alone in a crowd, with no one to turn to.

At her lowest point, a stranger gives her a message that brings her hope.  Now is the time to live life her own way.  Now is the time to choose to be happy.  And maybe it’s time to let a beautiful stranger be part of her life.

First Impressions
It’s been a while since I’ve read just a great cute romance story that wasn’t filled with hot raunchy sex scenes, and the reason it’s been awhile is because I love raunchy.  But after beginning this book I realized how much I missed these kinds of books.  I think I have an idea where this is going but it’s just a hunch.  So far this is a great quick read, and I love Cody so damn much!  Who wouldn’t love a guy that is perpetually happy and has fallen head over heels in love with the protagonist?

What I Loved
First of all this book is very short and sweet, but profoundly emotional all at the same time.  I love the sort of spiritual awakening Ava has just from some beautiful man dropping a note into her car.  I love characters that start out on their worst down of their lives and end with not only being happy, but a little wiser as well.  Right away I latched onto to Ava, and I admired her so much for packing up and moving across the country in the pursuit of her own life and doesn’t give that up, no matter how bad things get.

I love that even though this is a love story, it’s also a story about living your life to fullest and following your dreams. You know throughout the story that Cody is holding things back from Ava and in some ways that kind of annoyed me because she’s being so brutally honest with herself and him but he isn’t paying that back to her.  But at the same time it’s what kept me reading and why I finished this story in the very same day I began it because I was so damn intrigued.  This is book is so bittersweet words cannot describe how I felt when I finished.  I will say I was balling like a 14 year old girl watching a Justin Bieber concert!

Not So Much
I absolutely loved this story, and I have the biggest book hangover ever after reading it but I do feel like it could’ve been maybe 50 pages longer.  I wish there was more details as far as the foundation of Cody’s character goes.  At the end you finally enter into Cody’s world and what he was hiding from Ava and that was awesome, but I felt like it was a little rushed.  I would’ve liked to have gotten more detail out his family life, about his mother, and about his current house.  The ending I felt like was kind of just told to you, with no description of what Ava was going through, where her head was at hearing all this and what Cody’s environment looked like around her.  I wish there were more detail in the background places as well, I know that Ava lives in an expensive apartment building but I have no idea what that apartment building looks like.  There’s massive detail into what Cody looks like, or what he is wearing but the same attention isn’t paid towards Ava herself.  Overall great book, but very short and it could’ve been a little longer if those details were included.

This Book Was…
Very moving.  I have this biggest book hangover after finishing this one, along with red puffy eyes, and a drippy nose.  This book grabs hold of your heart and doesn’t let go to the bitter end.  I love Ava’s inner monologue, it felt very natural and it was easy to be emotionally invested in her character.  I love that Cody although being an 18 year old is so mature and so wise in lots of ways but shy and inexperienced in others.  Cody not only taught Ava a lot about life, he taught me a lot of things too and I love books that at the end you feel rung out but uplifted at the same time.  I do wish this book was a little longer, and at times it was obvious the author was not from this country, because the colloquialisms weren’t American.  I don’t have issues with this when the story doesn’t take place in the US, but if it does then the writing has be as if the author is American.  I wish there was more detail as far as San Diego goes, where in the city does Ava live?  Other than those little critiques this book was just beautifully written and so moving.  Like I said before I haven’t read a romance story that isn’t filled with sex in a really long time, and this story reminded me why I used to love those kinds of books.  Great story, easy read, emotional ending, and I would definitely read other stories from this author again.
