Laura’s Review of Overruled (The Legal Briefs, #1) By Emma Chase

Synopsis
As a DC defense attorney, Stanton Shaw keeps his head cool, his questions sharp, and his arguments irrefutable. They don’t call him the Jury Charmer for nothing – with his southern drawl, disarming smile and captivating green eyes – he’s a hard man to say no to. Men want to be him and women want to be thoroughly cross examined by him.

Stanton’s a man with a plan. And for a while, life was going according to that plan.

Until the day he receives an invitation to the wedding of his high school sweetheart and mother of his beloved ten-year old daughter. Jenny is getting married — to someone who isn’t him.

That's definitely not part of the plan.

Sofia Santos is a city raised, no-nonsense litigator who plans to become the most revered criminal defense attorney in the country. She doesn’t have time for relationships or distractions.

But when Stanton, her "friend with mind-blowing benefits" begs for help, she finds herself out of her element, out of her depth, and obviously out of her mind. Because she agrees to go with him – to The-Middle-Of-Nowhere, Mississippi – to do all she can to help Stanton win back the woman he loves.

Her head tells her she's crazy...and her heart says something else

entirely.

What happens when you mix a one stop-light town, two professional arguers, a homecoming queen, four big brothers, some Jimmy Dean sausage and a gun-toting Nana?

The Bourbon flows, passions rise and even the best laid plans get overruled by the desires of the heart.
What I Loved

I’m not quite sure where to begin because there was so much to love about this story!! The chemistry between Stanton and Sofia sizzles from the start, whether they’re in bed together or in the court room its apparent these two can’t keep their hands off each other!  I loved them together from the very beginning, and I thoroughly enjoyed every single sex scene as well, and there was plenty to choose from.

The story begins from Stanton’s point of view and explaining how he came to be a young father, who made the hard choice to leave his new family behind to go to law school.  Always with the intention to make a better life for his daughter Presley and his high school sweetheart Jenny.  Stanton’s goal was always to be a family once again one day but as the years go by the picture he has in his head seems to grow farther and farther away.

Along the way Stanton meets the young, hot, feisty lawyer Sophia Santos and sparks fly between the two! Of course, with the understanding their relationship will always be casual and Jenny will always come first.  Although the two seem to be in the friend zone for the much the book the relationship between them is solid and as much as Stanton loves to rip off Sophia clothes, he also values her opinion and advice. I think that’s what I loved most about Stanton, because he didn’t just blatantly dismiss Sophia as an easy lay he kept around when he was horny.  She was a friend who stood on equal ground as him intellectually in and out of the courtroom.

Not So Much
My only one huge complaint about this story is the entire plot was too predictable for me.  This is a typical love story about not knowing what’s staring you right in the face until it’s gone.  I wish there were some twists and turns that I didn’t see coming or maybe more drama added into the mix.  Obviously there was some heartfelt moments sprinkled throughout the plot but nothing putting me on a rollercoaster of emotions that I really enjoy being on.  This a feel good steamy romance though so I’m not going to knock the entire book for not having enough drama.

To Sum It All Up!
This was a quick steamy read that I really enjoyed!  Stanton Shaw is one hot lawyer that kicks butt in the court room and rules in the bedroom.  I loved the chemistry between him and Sofia, it poured off the pages from the very beginning and every time they were together I couldn’t wait until they were a lone again.

I did find it a little weird that Stanton would choose to bring the girl he’s having sex with to get back his high school sweetheart but Sofia is the kind of person that will always have your back no matter the circumstances.  I loved her loyalty and her spirit and the book came to life because of her.

Also, I loved the many different characters introduced in the book and I think it laid down a great foundation for the entire series.  Emma Chase has such a great way of introducing complex characters in a light and easy manner making it easy to fall in love in with them and wanting to know more.  There was a ton of great details as well, I could really imagine what living in Sunshine Mississippi would be like as well as what life is like for Sofia and Stanton in D.C.  This was a great beginning to a new series, I can’t wait to see what happens next!
