Laura’s Review of the Third Debt (Indebted, #4) by Pepper Winters

Synopsis

“She healed me. She broke me. I set her free. But we are in this together. We will end this together. The rules of this ancient game can’t be broken.”

Nila Weaver no longer recognises herself. She’s left her lover, her courage, and her promise. Two debts down. Too many to go.

Jethro Hawk no longer recognises himself. He’s embraced what he always ran from, and now faces punishment far greater than he feared.

It’s almost time. It’s demanding to be paid.

The Third Debt will be the ultimate test...
What I Loved
I think my heart broke most for Nila in this book rather than the ones before it.  The beginning immediately had me on edge and going what the hell has happened since the Second Debt ended?  The next chapter brings you back a couple months to where Nila has been taken back to her family home.  While she struggles to find her place in her old life, her heart aches for Jethro. I felt like my heart ached just as much as hers to return back to Hawksridge, even knowing how dangerous a place it is.  Nila’s overwhelming feelings for Jethro reached in my heart and all I wanted was for them to be together so badly.  It’s so weird going from wanting Nila to get away from that place as much as possible, to wanting her to go back to Hawksridge just as much.  I love when my emotions get all mixed up and contradictory because it shows up completely hooked I am in a story.

The changes that I saw in Jehtro throughout most of this story broke my heart as much as it did having Nila ripped away from him.  You could feel his desperation of needing his father’s approval while denying what his heart and mind tell him.  You do finally find out about Jethro’s “condition” and it’s something I’ve never heard of before but it explains so much about him.  Jethro in so many ways intrigues me and all I want is to learn more and more about as the series continues.

Not So Much
I absolutely love this series overall and I’m completely hooked up but there are times when I feel like the text gets a little too wordy for me.  I can feel Nila’s love for Jethro but it’s repeated a lot throughout the story and because of the repetition the plot slows down.  The story never becomes boring, but there were times when I wanted to say, okay I get it lets move on.

Also, and this is probably because I love the character of Jethro so much I wish we had more of a backstory for him.  I always kind of wonder what he was like as a teenager, if he had any girlfriends growing up or where he went to school?  Just little things so I can learn more about him, he and his lifestyle intrigues me so much that I just want more!
To Sum It All Up!

Overall this was yet another amazing story in this series.  The ending just completely shattered me in the worst possible way.  When Nila returns to Hawksridge to be by Jethro’s side and defeat his family, she finds out a lot has changed and not in her favor.

You are once again sucked into the dark world of the Debt Inheritance.  The third debt was something I feared from the foreshadowing in the other books and I had every right to be scared of it.   I’m not going to give anything away but to me this was the debt that is meant to strip away whatever soul you might have left.  There were so many times my heart was in my throat while reading and at the very end it plummeted to the ground.  Nila has changed into this truly formidable woman who believes that she will come out the winner of all of this and that’s what I love most about her.  I’ve never been so scared for her as she faces each and every challenge thrown her way. I love plots that I have no idea where it’s going or how it all end and I’m at a total loss after this huge cliff hanger!
