Deep (Layers Trilogy, #1) by Lacey Silks then you will LOVE this book!!
Basic
Summary
Joella Soriano is a tough as nails
detective who isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty and bring the scumbags of her
city to justice. She was recently promoted to second-grade detective and is
ready to spring into action. She gets her opportunity when the Captain asks her
to go undercover as a stripper at Hush, a strip club owned by the intriguing
and smoldering Brendan Kirkpatrick. Joella’s task is clear: Bring down the high
profile drug dealers that are disguising themselves as employees. Before now,
Joella could handle pretty much anything that crossed her path… until now.

First Impressions
So far the plot itself is very
good. I like that the person who knows
to defend themselves and kick some ass is the woman instead of the man. I really like Joella as a character so far,
and I find Brendan Kirkpatrick nothing less than steamy. So far
it’s a pretty easy read that pushes right along, I have not found myself bored
so far and before I knew I looked down and I was already 20% of the way through
the story. The sexual chemistry between
Joella and Brendan is hot and tense and I felt like I can feel the sexual
tension bubbling inside of me right alongside of the characters.
What I Loved
There were a lot of great points in
this book that kept me hooked while reading.
I definitely didn’t know how everything was going to end as far as
Brendan and his cousin Billy and what was going on at club Hush. There was definitely times where my heart was
going a million beats per minute and I couldn’t wait to get to the next page to
find out what happens next.
The
sex scenes between Brendan and Joella were freaking awesome and very very
hot. It’s been a while since I read a
book that had some really steamy lovemaking but this book happily filled that
void. I loved Brendan’s hot temper and
jealousy whenever Joella was even talking to other men it was definitely a very
big turn on. I love protective alpha men
and Brendan was definitely that when it came to Joella, as well as loving,
loyal, and very sweet.
I
totally loved the fact that Joella was the one set to protect Brendan and find
out what dirty business is going on in his club. I love that Joella at any moment could
probably kick Brendan’s ass if he got out of line and knows how to defend
herself. So many of these romance books
have the female leads are portrayed as whiney or weak so it was refreshing to
have a strong female lead this time around.
Not So Much…
I hate criticizing writing techniques
because I do feel that it’s just a matter of opinion what kind of technique you
like reading and what you don’t. Saying
that, the way this book was written was not my favorite. I felt like a lot of the conversations were
stilted and robotic instead of flowing naturally like real people talk. There was a lot of grammar mistakes as well
as constant confusion of past tense and present tense. In one paragraph it would start past tense
then two sentences it would switch to present tense and it just it just took my
attention away from the scene I was reading.
The story was filled to the brim with fractured sentences that sometimes
didn’t make sense while other sentences just repeated what was just said and
sounded redundant. I get that this is an
ARC that was reading and I’m sure there is more editing to be done which is
fine with me because this story was rough around the edges and just needs to be
smoothed out a little.
This Book Was…
Pretty good! I definitely enjoyed the basic theme to this
story and it was so wonderful to see Brendan and Joella fall in love with each
other and put their pasts behind them. I
would’ve liked to have seen more details in this book as far Brendan’s home,
what the club looks like, what Joella’s home looks like; those kinds of
things. There were a lot of holes in the
plot as far as those kinds of details are concerned for me but that didn’t take
away from the excitement of the story.
Most of this book didn’t completely shock me, and I kind of predicted
what was going on a certain point. But I
will say there were some things that through me for a loop and there was one
great surprise towards the end. Brendan
is one hot man and I loved every single think about him! This is a great easy read with a tinge of
darkness included with some suspense mixed right on in.
