Kari's 4 Star Review of The Deal (Off-Campus Book 1) by Elle Kennedy

Summary:

She's about to make a deal with the college bad boy...

Hannah Wells has finally found someone who turns her on. But while she might be confident in every other area of her life, she's carting around a full set of baggage when it comes to sex and seduction. If she wants to get her crush's attention, she'll have to step out of her comfort zone and make him take notice...even if it means tutoring the annoying, childish, cocky captain of the hockey team in exchange for a pretend date.

...and it's going to be oh so good

All Garrett Graham has ever wanted is to play professional hockey after graduation, but his plummeting GPA is threatening everything he's worked so hard for. If helping a sarcastic brunette make another guy jealous will help him secure his position on the team, he's all for it. But when one unexpected kiss leads to the wildest sex of both their lives, it doesn't take long for Garrett to realize that pretend isn't going to cut it. Now he just has to convince Hannah that the man she wants looks a lot like him.

What I loved:
Hannah-Hannah is not a popular girl, but she is smart and beautiful. She has demons from her past that she is still struggling to fight. But fight she does. She is very much aware of what she wants, and tutoring the star hockey player, Garrett Graham is not on that list. After much insistence, Hannah agrees to tutor Garret but only if he helps her get the attention of the star football player. Little did she know, that Garret would be the one to tutor her.

Garret-Garrett is not a dumb star hockey player, but he does have a minor issue in his philosophy class. Garrett also has demons from his past, one of which still shows his face at his hockey games. He agrees to help Hannah get the guy. The guy that isn’t him. Garret quickly figures out what he wants and nothing will keep him from it because it took him a really long time to get to that place.

What I didn’t love:
As a whole, I loved this book. I just wasn’t completely clear as to why Hannah carried the burden of some things her parents made her feel responsible for. As a parent, aren’t you supposed to protect and provide for your children even if that means helping them through a situation that takes a financial hit on your household? This is in no way a major factor in the story, but I just didn’t like that.

Overall:

I love friends to lovers stories no matter the age of the characters. This was no exception. It was filled with humor and immediately drew me into the story from page 1. I am new to discovering Elle Kennedy, but now that I have, I am excited to find out more. This is not your typical athlete/beautiful girl story. There are many layers to each character and the more you learn, the more you love them.
