Laura’s Review of Fourth Debt (Indebted, #4) by Pepper Winters

Synopsis
Fifth Book in the New York Times Bestselling Series

“We’d won. We’d cut through the lies and treachery and promised an alliance that would free us both. But even as we won, we lost. We didn’t see what was coming. We didn’t know we had to plan a resurrection.”

Nila Weaver fell in love. She gifted her entire soul to a man she believed was worthy. And in the process, she destroyed herself. Three debts paid, the fourth only days away. The Debt Inheritance has almost claimed another victim.

Jethro Hawk fell in love. He let down his walls to a woman he believed was his cure. For a moment, he was free. But then he paid the ultimate price.

There is no more love. Only war. Hope is dead. Now, there is only death all around them.
What I Loved
Out of all the books in this series I think there hasn’t been such extremes than in this one.  Nila starts out at her absolute lowest in the beginning, then gains hope and some sort of happiness, then back to complete desolation at the end.

The Fourth Debt picks up at the very minute the Third Debt has ended, with Cut shooting his two sons.  Never in a million years would I think a father could do that to his children, but the Third Debt proved that Cut has no limits.  The one person I have feared most in this series, Daniel, has now become Nila’s owner and god only knows what is in store for her now.

When Nila was morning the loss of Jethro I felt like I was morning right along with her, instantaneously you feel her devastation.  She’s once again thrown into this crazy world, but with no one protecting her anymore and that was what sucked me in the most.  As a reader you truly have no idea where this story will go next and I absolutely love that.  So many romances are predictable so when I’m at a loss of what’s going to come means I’m truly enjoying reading that book.  There is so much I love about this series, but this book in particular throws you into the lowest lows, then brings you to the highest highs only to be knocked back down again.

I also really like Vaughn being more involved in the storyline, he has always been this kind of outside but formidable character that sometimes annoys you but you always understand why. He has now been sucked into maddening world and is forming his own relationships. That was very refreshing to experience amongst everything else happening.
Not So Much

I think out of all the books Nila has annoyed me the most in this one.  I really felt like at times that she’s just completely daft! She is constantly giving half-truths or flat out lying to try to win this Debt Inheritance but when people are clearly lying to her to save her ass she doesn’t get it.  It was so obvious to me who was on Nila’s side and who wasn’t and she took everything anyone said to her at face value.  She would start to question herself and think maybe they are helping her then she would change her mind again and the back and forth got a little tiring.  There are so many layers to every character in this series, so it annoyed me Nila didn’t dig sometimes to really understand what was going on around her.
To Sum It All Up!
Like I said before this was a book of extremes.  The story begins at probably one of the lowest points of the series. Then there are these wonderful loving parts, only for it all to be torn to pieces once again.  I’m not going to give anything away, just be ready to cry, then smile then have the crap scared out of you.  Like every other story in this series, The Fourth Debt ends with a HUGE cliff hanger.

What I truly liked is that for the first time in the series there is something that Nila knows that Cut doesn’t.  This is a new twist to the overall plot that I think foreshadows many things to come.  Cut always seems to be one step ahead of Jethro and the other Hawks but now they truly know something that Cut doesn’t and I can’t wait to see where that goes.  I’m so freaking excited to start the Final Debt and truly see how all of this madness will come to end, and pray that I like that the way it does!
