Laura’s Review of First Debt (Indebted, #2) by Pepper Winters

Synopsis
“You say I’ll never own you. If I win—you willingly give me that right. You sign not only the debt agreement, but another—one that makes me your master until your last breath is taken. You do that, and I’ll give you this.”

Nila Weaver’s family is indebted. Stolen, taken, and bound not by monsters but by an agreement written over six hundred years ago, she has no way out.

She belongs to Jethro as much as she denies it.

Jethro Hawk’s patience is running out. His inheritance gift tests, challenges, and surprises him—and not in good ways. He hasn’t leashed her but he thinks he might’ve found a way to bind her forever.

Debts are mounting. Payment waiting.

What I Loved
Once again I’m blown away by this series; we begin right where Debt Inheritance left off with Nila being hunted like an animal caught up in one of Jethro’s many mind games.  The weirdest part for me as this point is, I’m not quite sure I want Nila to escape or not.  I thoroughly hate the Hawks but there is something about Jethro that intrigues me and I want more.  I am enamored with stories that keep me guessing and captivated and First Debt did that from beginning to end.

Also, I loved that we get aspects of the story from Jethro’s point of view so we can see just how truly twisted this all is.  It’s also nice to see that Nila is trapped in this hell but there is some sort of comfort with Jethro that no one in this household maybe except for Kestrel seems to offer.  I’m not sure if I completely trust Kes but he does seem to be the one semi-normal person on the estate, I do feel like there is more to his story though.  But that’s probably what I loved most about this series, it’ keeps me guessing and questioning everything.

There were so many twists and turns I probably held my breath for a good part of the book.  I loved that as the plot moved along Nila slowly found her backbone and developed into the woman that she is truly meant to be.  I think I hesitated about Nila being free of Jethro and the Hawks only because I liked who she was becoming; a woman not to be messed with.  The first debt she pays had my heart in pieces, I couldn’t stop reading because it was so compelling.  Some questions have been answered but as the plot continues many seem more pop up.

Not So Much

I really don’t have a lot to complain about when it comes to this book.  I do like how the series is moving along and I think the pace and development is spot on.  But I do feel at times that Nila is a little wishy washy.  It’s not that I don’t understand why; this is all very new to her, she doesn’t know who she can trust and doesn’t know what lays ahead for her.  I just feel like one minute Jethro is someone she wants and needs, then the next she vows to kill him, then she’s back to being attracted to him.  I get why she feels this way I just hope it doesn’t continue on with her going back and forth constantly.

To Sum It All Up!
Pepper Winters has a way of creating these dark and twisted plots that leave you breathless and at a complete and total loss.  First Debt much like Debt Inheritance ends with a HUGE cliffhanger that I kind of saw coming but was still shocked when it all actually happened.  We learn a little bit more of the history between the Weavers and Hawks and start to understand how each debt will probably relate to something from the past.

You can feel the frustration and fear Nila feels each and every day she opens her eyes finds herself at Hawksridge.  The minute Bryan or Daniel are involved as a reader your fear is heightened just as much as Nila’s would be.  I love that each emotion Nila feels you experience right along with her and that’s because of how well written this book is and just how impactful the plot is.  You pray that there is some sort of happy ending for Nila but at this point I have no idea how that will ever happen, if it even does.
