Kari's 4-Star Review of Deacon by Kristen Ashley

Summary:
Deacon has an ugly history, a history that broke him, leaving him a ghost of a man. Out of necessity, he left the normal world to descend into the criminal world and found he fit. So he stayed. Cold as ice and living off the grid, Deacon has no intention to connect, not with anyone.

Then he returns to some remote cabins in the Colorado Mountains and finds they have new owners. One of them is Cassidy Swallow, a young woman willing to work hard to live her quiet dream in a house by a river surrounded by aspen and pine.

Suddenly, Deacon finds he’s at war. Cassidy’s pull for him to connect is strong. He fights it, but he loses, always coming back for more. But when he does, he gives her nothing.

From the first time she sees him, Cassidy knows Deacon is dead inside. She knows he’s the kind of man who could destroy a woman. But one night when Deacon’s control slips, Cassidy takes a chance.

He might break her. He also might be her dream come true.

What I loved:

First and foremost, its a Kristen Ashley book. Of course I loved it! But let’s break it down a bit.

Cassidy aka Cassie- As much as I love KA books, this one was amazing because of Cassie. She was strong and independent. She didn’t need a man to help her realize her dreams. She worked hard to make Glacier Lily, the cabins she owns and is working to fix up, a reality. At the time she took over the cabins, we read that Nina, from The Gamble just had her situation there. (I won’t spoil it just in case you haven’t read it yet!) When we first meet Cassie, she is with Grant. Grant is lazy and doesn’t do much to help Cassie get the cabins fixed up. They begin to fight and their relationship declines. But not before Deacon comes to stay for the first time at Glacier Lily. Deacon is introduced as Cassie and Grant are arguing.

Deacon aka Deacon Deacon aka John Priest-Deacon is a bit of a mystery when he first shows up at Glacier Lily to stay in cabin 11. As previously mentioned, he shows up just as Cassie and Grant are arguing. He doesn’t get involved at that time, but from that stay in cabin 11, Deacon becomes a repeat customer over the years. Eventually Cassie realizes that Grant is no good for her and they split. Deacon makes his move and their relationship starts. Deacon leaves for long lengths of time, but always comes back. Deacon proves to be another alpha-delight.

The story-I enjoyed this story. The way they “play” was a new angle that Kristen Ashley approached. It was done perfectly for me. (Read and find out what I mean!) Not over the top and it helped the characters grow together. It was pivotal at a certain point, but again you will have to read to see what I mean. LOL.

Overall:

This was another fantastic read from Kristen Ashley. To live inside her mind for even an hour must be chaotic. The ability and talent to write stories that are fresh and original, but still weave prior stories in and out, leaves me shaking my head. I can’t say enough about how much I love Kristen Ashley and her writing. Keep em’ coming lady!
