Into
the Darkness
(The
Dark Angel Series, #1)
By Kat T. Masen
Releasing July 5, 2014
Synopsis
“He is the most beautiful man you will
ever see. His soul will capture you, but don’t be fooled, Mi Corazon. He will
use all his powers to draw you in when there is nothing left to do but take the
one thing you’ve been holding on to.”
What began as an affair seven years earlier has since become a tragic love
story, a tale of two souls fighting to be together with only their love to
guide them. But as people make mistakes, they find themselves once again
reliving the past, asking the questions that have remained unanswered. Until
now.
Charlie Mason fought hard to rebuild her life and find love again. When the
ever-so-perfect Julian Baker proposes marriage, she leaves the past behind her
to plan a future with him. Then, in a cruel twist of fate, her past and future
collide. Broken and scarred, Charlie is forced to face him once again, the dark
angel who took the one thing she had been holding on to—her fragile heart.
Lex Edwards has other ideas. He wants her back and will stop at nothing, even
when he realizes the Charlie he knew in high school has changed. She is a game
player, and forgiveness is not on her agenda. A dark past threatens their
future and the only way to overcome it is to relive the memories. Lex must take
her back into the darkness.

Excerpt
We walked away from the table. For a split second my eyes met his.
Those eyes that haunted me in my sleep.
Those eyes that I couldn’t escape no matter how hard I tried.
Those eyes that stole my heart and never truly gave it back.
Those eyes that belonged to the one and only Dark Angel.
Seeing him again took me back to places I vowed never to return, the pain I no longer allowed myself to feel. Why did life want to throw a giant curveball when it was just starting to feel right? I was the person standing in the middle of the crowd and the only one to get crapped on by a seagull that flew past. That summed it up in one neat package. Except for the fact that I couldn’t get out of my head the way he looked, the way he sounded, the way he smelled. I felt like I was sitting in the DeLorean from Back to the Future, transporting back to 2006, and there I was again. There he was again. How did this happen? And just a day after Julian proposed to me?

If
you have read and enjoyed Fifty Shades of Grey (Fifty Shades, #1) by E.L. James, Fixed on You (Fixed,
#1) by Laurelin Paige, and Beauty from Pain
(Beauty, #1) by Georgia Cates then you will LOVE
this book!
Basic Summary
“He is the most beautiful man you will ever see.
His soul will capture you, but don’t be fooled, Mi Corazon. He will use all his
powers to draw you in when there is nothing left to do but take the one thing
you’ve been holding on to.”

First Impressions
Well I am about 40% through the book and I really
liking the plot. I would say this book falls
into that Fifty Shades of Grey genre which is over saturated with same type of
plot line. Wonderfully, the author has
put a refreshing spin on Charlie and Lex’s story by giving them a very sordid
past. But as much as I am enjoying the
storyline, the grammar errors and inconsistencies are just too distracting. Charlie at one point is going to a restaurant
downtown in one paragraph and then magically the place is on the Upper East
Side. This is an ARC though and all that
can change in the final version. I don’t
like being too harsh on authors but the constant mistakes were taking me out of
the story when all I want to do is stay in it and follow the roller coaster
that is Charlie and Lex’s love life. I
am definitely intrigued though already can’t wait for the second book in this
series.
What I Loved
First
off whoa (picture Joey Lawrence on Blossom while saying whoa). So I am a huge fan of these types of books,
where the billionaire playboy falls in love with the clumsy standard girl and
there are just constant ups and downs as the series goes on. This series falls into this category
beautifully, but Kat T. Masen has managed to do what many authors cannot, which
is put a different spin on the typical story by giving these characters a scandalous
past. I enjoyed the fact that the book didn’t just show what is happening
presently to Charlie and I Lex but also shows you what happened between them in
the past. So you get two stories for the
price of one while reading. I also like
when authors switch point of views and each chapter in this switches between
Charlie’s point of view and Lex’s point of view.
The sexual chemistry between Charlie and
Lex grabs from the very beginning and by the end has you begging for more. There are tons of hot sex scenes between the
two, I think my favorite happened in a public bathroom; needless to say it was
very hot.
Not So Much
First I want to say I really enjoyed the plot and
the characters, especially the supporting characters. They definitely lend a comic relief to a very
dramatic storyline which is always enjoyable in my eyes. Saying that, there just was not a great
foundation laid out to this story. I
felt like the character development was great and I got a real grasp of who Lex
and Charlie are, but the actual plot itself was not built the same way. There was a massive lack in detail when it
came to the surroundings. I have no idea
what Charlie’s office looks like, what Charlie’s apartment looks like, or what
Lex’s apartment in London looks like; nothing.
There is such great detail put into Charlie’s clothes shoes and car, but
the same attention is not paid to any background. By having great detail about what’s going on
around the characters you build a better foundation for the story over all
because it pains a clearer picture.
Also the story was filled more with character’s
actions with no real follow up or explanation.
Charlie is working one minute, then putting Will to sleep, then leaving
to go to dinner. There was no
explanation of how the scene jumped from one point to another and if there was
it was a sentence or two. Those markers
are very important when telling a story so the reader knows the time line and
where things are at. I just wish there
was more follow up with the storylines because it would’ve filled up the holes
in the story.
This Book Was…
So
wonderful! I really enjoyed this story
and I can definitely say I am a Charlex fan for sure. I love the new spin on this type of story
because it definitely separates it from the herd. I loved the massive sex scenes that took
place as well, thank you very much for those Kat T. Masen. I also enjoy the fact that Charlie is the one
with secrets and is obviously hiding something big from Lex, because usually it’s
the man that has all these skeletons in his closet. I like that Charlie is the one with something
to hide, although I am pretty sure what those secrets are, but it’s just an
educated guess and I can completely wrong.
It puts Charlie in a better position of power which is not usually
afforded to female leads. This story
definitely ends with a cliffhanger, it’s not a huge one because like most situations
there is an explanation for everything but it definitely leaves you wanting to
know the exact minute the next book comes out.
There was definitely a lot of grammar mistakes and inconsistences but I
had an ARC and this all could be corrected with the final edition. My only complaint is that it was very obvious
the author wasn’t American because a lot of the colloquialisms were not
American at all, and the details were not enough to show me the author really
knew the details of New York City. What
the book lacked in details though it more than made up for in sexual chemistry
and true love. I cannot wait to what
will happen with Charlie and Lex next!
