Laura’s Review of Behind His Eyes – Convicted: The Missing Years (Consequences, #4)

This is a companion piece to Convicted by Aleatha Romig, this should not be read as a standalone and should be read after you have read the Consequences series.

Basic Summary
THE MISSING YEARS is the final piece to Aleatha Romig’s CONSEQUENCES SERIES puzzle. Follow the twists and turns as secrets are revealed, consequences are delivered, and the future is shown.

In CONVICTED we saw what happened that fateful afternoon at the Rawlings Estate. Now experience the shocking repercussions firsthand. More than a companion, this full-length novel fills in the gap of time that was only mentioned, beginning when Claire Nichols forgets and seen through the eyes of collective men (the HIS is plural).

In THE MISSING YEARS, readers will see Anthony Rawlings fight for what belongs to him and cope with the reality of his past. Watch as Harrison Baldwin discovers the truth that threatens his beliefs, and as John Vandersol comes to terms with his revelations. Witness Phillip Roach, as he decides with whom his loyalties lay, and Brent Simmons, as he demonstrates the meaning of friendship—no matter the cost.

As the pieces of the puzzle fall into place, BEHIND HIS EYES CONVICTED goes beyond. This final installment of the series offers a glimpse into the future of the lives that will forever be changed because there was a man who...

Once upon a time, signed a napkin that he knew was a contract. As an esteemed businessman, he forgot one very important rule—he forgot to read the fine print. It wasn’t an acquisition to own another person as he’d previously assumed. It was an agreement to acquire a soul.
—Aleatha Romig, CONVICTED

BEHIND HIS EYES CONVICTED also contains a complete glossary of characters and a timeline that covers the entire series. If you have read New York Times bestselling author Aleatha Romig’s CONSEQUENCES, TRUTH, and CONVICTED, you must learn the rest of the story:BEHIND HIS EYES CONVICTED: THE MISSING YEARS!

First Impressions
Beginning this book like any other book in this series I start with some trepidation, a party of me can’t wait to start reading it while the other part of me is readying myself for how anxious this story makes me.  I began reading this one with the same feeling but with being even more emotional because I knew this is the last one.  I didn’t want to say goodbye to Tony and Claire, I just love them so much and I knew by the end of this book I would have tears in my eyes because it would finally be over.  So far this book is awesome; I had a lot of questions before reading this one about those missing years where Claire was in Everwood and Tony in prison so I am happy that I am starting to get some answers.  I thought I would feel better reading this one because I knew  the ending, just like when I was reading Convicted and couldn't wait to find what the hell happened, I was just as anxious this time around not being able to patiently wait for Tony to get back Claire and Nichol.  I just want them all back together again so badly!!!!

What I Loved

There are so many things about this book and this series as a whole that I loved I truly don’t know where to begin.  First of all I love that we got see little excerpts of My Life as it Didn't Appear; the novel Meredith Banks wrote about Claire’s experience when she first met Tony.  That was awesome because while I’m reading a story that parallel’s Convicted and I know I love Tony now, but reliving Claire’s experience while at the same time reading Tony’s feelings was very thought provoking.  Every time I’m reminded of what Tony was like in Consequences I always think of, if this really happened to a woman in real life and it was publicized how would I feel about these two people?

I had tears in my eyes so many times while reading this one and especially at the end, yet there were times where I giggled and smiled as well.  Most of the time though I was just anxious to get to the end so Claire and Tony could be together again. I couldn't get enough of this book, each chapter was like crack to me; at the end of each chapter I would be like "just one more hit before I go to bed" which lead to many sleepy days at work. I was a ball of paradoxes, reading as quickly as possible so I can see Tony and Claire together, yet not wanting this all to end too soon.

I loved that not only do we get Tony’s point of view we get many others as well, one of them being Harry and going along with him as he slowly discovered who was responsible for Simon’s death.  It was so great to see how all that played out in his life, and how he put all the pieces together.  That was probably the biggest shock when I was reading convicted, so to get to see that play out was awesome!

I loved that we also got to see John’s point of view in this story because we not only get to see what happened to Tony during the missing years we also get to see what was going on with Claire immediately after her shooting Catherine.  We also get to see what Emily was like during this time, and although I get she had Claire’s best interest at heart she still annoyed me.  All that anger I had towards Emily in Convicted boiled right back up to the surface when I was reading.  But John annoyed me less in this book, Emily to me was just too close minded and stubborn to really see what was going on and John was the person to balance her out or be the voice or reason.  She annoyed me a little less in this story because we get a little bit more of a continuation of what the future looks like for all of them so that made me a little happy.

This Book Was
Amazing on so many levels can’t even describe!  The reason I didn't add a Not So Much (My version of the cons of a book) to this review is because there isn't one thing I disliked.  I know some people put how they hate certain characters in their cons category but I believe those kinds of characters are there to stir all those negative emotions and if they are written right they do it beautifully.  Emily was written beautifully and as much as she annoyed me some other characters (Liz and Catherine) I would rather hate them then not feel anything at all.

There were so many emotional parts in this book that I didn't see coming.  When Brent walked into his house after Courtney and all his friends thought he was dead had tears in my eyes and chills down my body.  When Tony and Claire see Nichol for the first time in over two years I was crying like a baby. On top of crying a lot you get everything answered to so many mysteries.  One being the mystery of the packages that are talked about at the end of Convicted (another curve ball trust me!).  You also experience what was going through Tony’s head when he presented Claire with divorce papers and seriously, it was like my heart broke all over again reliving all that.  The ending had my heart pounding one minute then crying the next which just how I like it!  I am so sad to be well and truly done with the Consequences series, but I for me at least I got the closure I needed and said good bye to Claire, Tony, and everyone else with a smile on my face.

Side Note
I have never loved an entire series as much as I love this one.  I have never experienced a series that was so thought provoking that it had me still questioning things months and even years later.  I love when books push the boundaries of what is right and what is wrong; I love books that have me stressed out from beginning to the bitter end.  Aleatha Romig has made me experience an entire spectrum of emotions that I didn't think was possible while reading and I thank her every day for that.  I have never loved and hated a character as much as I have loved and hated Tony. While at the same time I have never wanted a happy ending more than I have for Tony and Claire. Thank you from the bottom of my heart Aleatha Romig for creating this world and these truly amazing people leading extraordinary lives and sharing that with us all.  I will miss Tony and Claire so much but I am a rereader and I have feeling I will be revisiting them many times.
