Laura’s Review of Hard Ball by C.D. Reiss

 Synopsis
Perfect ass.

Perfect arms.

Perfect swagger.

They call Dash Wallace the Diamond King.

He’s the hottest commodity in baseball and in the bedroom.

When he runs the bases, every woman’s eyes are glued to his stunning body and a smile that puts the night lights to shame.

I’m no queen. I’m a regular girl with a regular job. I just watch him on TV and from the bleachers, season after season.

Girls like me grab a guy like that one in a million times.

My number just came up, and he is as spectacular in bed as he is on the field.

But there’s not a woman in the world who can distract Dash Wallace from the game. Not for a moment. Not even me.

Until the night I do. And everything changes.
What I Loved
I love C.D. Reiss and I was excited to see what other hot romance she could cook up next, and then to mix sports into it made it all the more exciting for me and I was not disappointed in the least! The story begins with an overworked, tired librarian helping her underprivileged students enjoy a day out with the LA Dodgers when she happens upon one very hot Dodger in particular, Dash Wallace.  Although some sparks may fly a little, the chemistry isn’t exactly instant but the curiosity certainly is and of course the romance grows from there!

I kind of liked Dash’s mild stalking of Vivian in the beginning, he had good reason to which added more to the plot and to his overall character.  I loved that he wasn’t just some stuck up player who thought very highly of his skills on and off the field.  There was definite depth to him and his background as a human and as baseball player.  That sucked me right into this story because it gave the plot a lot more depth than just a typical romance and made me more emotionally involved in the story.

Also I get that Dash’s thoughts are very scattered and run together at times but there were times that from Vivian’s point of view it became that way too.  Her feelings to me towards the end just never felt resolved or addressed.  They felt more scattered and desperate rather than concluded, but that’s just me.  Of course there was a happy ending and I was happy about that so I can’t complain too much.
Not So Much
I really don’t have a ton of complaints about this book it truly was a joy to read.  There were some aspects I didn’t particularly like though.  You know that Dash likes dominance and BDSM because he talks about it a lot but it’s not really ever displayed or gone into detail when it comes to Dash’s and Vivian’s sex scenes.  There are definitely sex scenes in the book but not really BDSM ones, it’s too glossed over for me.

To Sum It All Up!
I really enjoyed reading this book! It’s been a long time since I’ve read a sports romance and this story reminded me why I love reading them so much.  Dash’s character was so multidimensional and he gave the plot so much depth it sucked me into the story instantly.  Vivian was a girl who dedicated her life to her father and her job but she still had a strong personality and sucked me into her world.  Dash might’ve swooped in and changed her life but at the end of the day he needed her just as much as she needed him and I loved her.  The chemistry between them sizzled which made the sex scenes pretty damn hot!

The way this book was written was definitely unique but refreshing, it put a nice spin on a romance which kept my attention.  Their constant texting and Dash’s love for Shakespeare definitely shook things up and put a smile on my face the entire time.  This was a quick easy but fun and definitely steamy read!  I loved it from beginning to end so if you’re in the mood for a fun romantic standalone that involves a sports hottie then this is the book for you!

Meet the Author
CD Reiss is a USA Today bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn't pick up she's at the well hauling buckets.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master's degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels.

She's frequently referred to as the Shakespeare of Smut which is flattering but hasn't ever gotten her out of chopping that cord of wood.

If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.

“Listen!” I yanked back at his hand at the bottom of the stairs, but he yanked me and swung me through a doorway.
The choir dressing room was ancient with wooden lockers built in the Depression. So, when he pushed me against them, there wasn’t a clatter of sheet metal, but a thunk as they rattled.
Antonio grabbed me by the wrists, locking them together in two fingers and holding them over my head.
“You think I’m worried about him?” He put his finger to my face. “I spend not one minute of my life thinking about that man with you. He’s not even a man. He’s not worthy of you. He’s one of a thousand rats on the bottom of a sinking ship.”
“Then what’s the problem?” My question came out in a gasp because my body gravitated toward him, arching to press against him, just as he arched in the opposite curve to keep his face close to mine.
“Why did you see him?” I could have kissed him, but I moved my head against the locker door, turning my face toward the arched lead-glass window. I wanted him, not in spite of his anger but because of it.
“He went to Katrina. His team grilled her, and I don’t like it.”
“What did they grill her about?”
He knew damn well, but he wasn’t going to assume. I noticed that about him. He never assumed anything or jumped to a conclusion.
“You,” I whispered.
“Me.”
“You.”
“And you told him what?” he said.
“To stop. To leave you alone. That if he didn’t, I had enough on him to make his life a living hell.”
“Do you think you maybe should talk to me first, before you do crazy shit?”
“No.” I twisted and pulled my hands down. He let them go but increased his weight on me, pushing me against the lockers. “You barely let me out of an apartment that’s not even mine. I highly doubt you’d let me see Daniel.”
“Because it’s stupid and dangerous.”
“It’s what I have to give. And it’s useful to you. And go to hell if you don’t like it. I will never, ever sit still while he’s after you.”
“I’m already going to hell. Grazie.”
I pushed him away, and he grabbed my jaw, holding me still while he put his nose next to mine and spoke into my mouth. “You’re a loaded gun. Do you see that? You’re from a different world, but you smell like home to me. I haven’t been to Napoli in ten years, but whenever you’re near me, I smell olive flowers. My heart gets sick with thirst, but the water is poison.”
“Antonio—”
“I’m drowning, Contessa.”
“What are you talking about?”
His face got tight, holding back a flood of emotion. His fingers pressed harder on my face until I took hold of his wrist, pulling it down. He let go.
“Talk to me,” I said. “Just tell me.”
He looked confused for a second. Overwhelmed. Then, as if the dam had burst, he wrapped his arms around me and put his mouth to mine. It happened so quickly that I didn’t kiss him back at first. I couldn’t breathe; he held me so tight, but I got my arms around him and my mouth open, pulling him close, pushing as much of myself as I could into whatever part of him was within my reach. Thighs, hips, hands, shoulders, lips bashing lips, tongues forceful on tongues. It wasn’t even a kiss, or at least, not like one I’d ever had before. It was a slap, a punch, the use of force, a coercion of two worlds into uncomfortable cohesion.
The kiss never got soft and only ended when he jerked himself away.
“Talk to me,” I said in a breath.
“The thing I want most is the only thing between me and getting it. You are everything that will destroy me. I should go back to who I was. But you made me dream I could be free, when I’d forgotten I was in prison.”
“Is this about you being honest? Is it about me seeing Daniel? Antonio. If I hurt you, just tell me how. Let me make it right. Let me help you get out.”
He caressed my face with both palms with a tenderness that shouldn’t have been able to contain such intensity.
“Sweet olive blossoms,” he said. “That was God’s message to me.” He stepped away, and the space between us became a sigh. He held his hand. “The only way out is through.”

CD Reiss is a USA Today and Amazon bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn’t pick up, she’s at the well, hauling buckets.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master’s degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere, but it did embed TV story structure in her head well enough for her to take a big risk on a TV series structured erotic series called Songs of Submission. It’s about a kinky billionaire hung up on his ex-wife, an ingenue singer with a wisecracking mouth; art, music and sin in the city of Los Angeles.

Critics have dubbed the books “poetic,” “literary,” and “hauntingly atmospheric,” which is flattering enough for her to put it in a bio, but embarrassing enough for her not to tell her husband, or he might think she’s some sort of braggart who’s too good to give the toilets a once-over every couple of weeks or chop a cord of wood.

Laura's Review of Sing (Songs of Submission, #7) by C.D. Reiss

Synopsis
This is the last book in the series.

Take my hand, my love.
On sinews of air we tread
Aught but distance our guide
With no tempo to our gait
No endpoint drawn
Neither plot nor plan
By the thorns of a compass rose
We bound toward the horizon

What I Loved

Wow well, this book definitely set the entire series into an entirely different direction, which I loved because I didn’t see it coming at all! The last installment in this series had my heart just in pieces most of the time with tears pouring down my face.  I just fell so much more in love with Jonathan and Monica and because of that I almost felt desperate at times because I wanted them to have their happily ever after so badly. I love books that tug on my heart strings then rip it out and hopefully put it all back together at the end.

There was so much going on in this book, not just with Monica and Jonathan as a couple but other parts of Monica’s life.  Her desperation at times just made me want to reach into this story and hold her because everything that was happening to her was so much.  I felt like I was drowning in her misery and I loved every second of it.  I think what I loved most about this part in particular was that Monica turned into the hero not Jonathan, making her a stronger woman than I ever thought possible.

Not So Much

This story was just so amazing that I truly don’t think I have any real complaints.  I think the only negative part of this story was that I wish the epilogue was more detailed and explained better.  Not so much for Monica and Jonathan’s story but more for Monica’s career and even Darren’s.  He was such a wonderful supporting character that it’s not really explained how he got to that point in his life just that he’s there.  I get the story isn’t about him, but I felt like a couple more paragraphs would’ve made the epilogue more well-rounded not just with Darren but with Monica as well.

To Sum It All Up!

I really enjoyed reading this series, and I as horrifying this particular part was I think I loved it the most out of all the other books.  I love tons of drama and heart ache and this one was packed with it on every page.  I love Monica so much there are no words on how much I enjoyed getting to know her and going on this journey with her Jonathan.  I think what sets this series apart from many others in this genre is that at the end of it all Jonathan was the one that needed help and support from Monica, usually it’s the rich man coming in and saving the day but in this one it was Monica that became the backbone in their love.  Also it was magical to have music so intertwined with all the emotions and sequences in their love story.  I think it made their love more mystical and beautiful all at the same time.  I felt like at times I could almost hear Monica’s voice of her play the viola.  The chemistry between them heats up immediately in this series and very much continues throughout the entire series. I like that the author got creative with their sex scenes in this one, because those hot scenes definitely give you a reprieve from all the drama going on around them and I think it made me love those scenes even more.  Overall this was such an amazing series I am totally mystified by Monica and Jonathan and days later I still have a crazy book hangover after finishing it, so much so I can’t wait to sit down with them and start all over again.
