Laura’s Review of Ricochet (Vigilantes, #1) By Keri Lake

Synopsis
The only sure way to destroy a man is to take what he cannot live without.

Three years ago, I had everything.

A beautiful wife.
A son.
A reason for living.

Until a ruthless task force, assembled under Mayor Michael Culling, with a brutal strategy to make the streets of Detroit ‘safe’, ripped away everything I loved in a deadly hunt called The Culling.

They tried to kill me, too. I wish they had. Now I'm cursed by the memories of that night, and the words I whispered to my dying wife.

A promise—to avenge the wrong and set it right.

I’m no longer Nick Ryder. I’m a masked vigilante. Faceless. Loveless. Fearless. A man with nothing left to lose—one who's seen the dark and violent truth behind the city’s flawless veneer.

Michael Culling doesn’t know who I am. Or what I want. All he knows is that I’ve kidnapped his beautiful wife.

An eye for an eye—isn’t that how the saying goes? And Aubree Culling is the perfect pawn to destroy him.

If she doesn’t destroy me first.
What I Loved

Oh my god I loved this book so much!  The emotions I felt while reading were all over the place.  The prologue immediately sucks you into Nick’s story wondering what the hell is happening, and how this all begun.  You are introduced to Nick’s life and circumstances pretty quickly and it just shattered me.  His story was gut wrenching and as the story unfolds more details comes out and there were so many times I had tears in my eyes just reading all of this.  I love books that can stir some sort of emotion in me but I am addicted to stories that can evoke a ton of emotions and this one certainly did that.

From Nick’s point of view you have a certain opinion of Aubree but the minute the story changes to her point of view all of that was turned on its axis.  I really loved the character of Aubree, from the moment she arrives your heart just aches for her.  She’s this woman that lives in her own personal hell every single day and from the very beginning I just wanted to her be free and happy.  She’s made choices in her life, but is very much a victim of circumstance like Nick and because of that both of them made it easy for me to be emotionally invested in the plot.  I love strong female characters that can hold their own in even the most stressful of environments and Aubree shines in this category.  I seriously think I became her number one fan almost immediately.
Not So Much
I literally have nothing to put in this section because I loved this book so much.  My only complaint is that I wish it was longer because I need more Nick and Aubree in my life!
To Sum It All Up!
Instantly I was emotionally attached to both Aubree and Nick and to experience them fight this uphill battle had my heart pounding most of the time.  There is a ton of action and suspense in this book which I absolutely loved with a big surprise that I didn’t see coming at all!  I love when I can’t guess an ending and I truly had no clue.  Not only was there was a lot of action but there was a lot of sex as well and that was off the charts hot.  The attraction between them sizzled every time Nick laid eyes on Aubree and I loved their relationship.

This story is definitely dark so if you don’t like dark then don’t read it!  Ricochet is raw and gritty and brings you to places you didn’t know was possible.  My heart was pounding out of my chest so many times, and I literally couldn’t put this book down.  Every single thing about this story I loved.  The details were amazing, it’s easy to imagine what life is like in Detroit, and the transformations the city has gone through.  The author did a beautiful job of expressing Nick’s heart break over losing his family and what it’s been like for him to live with that every single day.  I absolutely loved this book and I definitely think this will be a re-read over and over again for me.
