Synopsis
“I own you. I have the piece of paper to prove it. It’s
undeniable and unbreakable. You belong to me until you’ve paid off your debts.”
Nila Weaver’s family is indebted. Being the first born daughter, her life is forfeit to the first born son of the Hawks to pay for sins of ancestors past. The dark ages might have come and gone, but debts never leave. She has no choice in the matter.
She is no longer free.
Jethro Hawk receives Nila as an inheritance present on his twenty-ninth birthday. Her life is his until she’s paid off a debt that’s centuries old. He can do what he likes with her—nothing is out of bounds—she has to obey.
There are no rules. Only payments.

What I Loved
Wow, well I’m not even sure where
to begin, my heart is in my throat and pounding after just finishing this story. The entire plot was amazing from beginning to
end with a hell of a cliffhanger. Pepper
Winters made it so easy to feel the complete devastation and loss that Nila
experiences the moment she realizes life as she knows it, is over. You only get a glimpse of what her life was
like before Jethro takes her but it was enough to feel how heart broken and
lost Nila is as she discovers a family secret she knew nothing about and is
helpless to change it.
I
loved that Jethro Hawk completely confounds me because I like being emotionally
confused about characters. There aren’t
a lot of redeeming qualities about Jethro but right away you get a sense that
Nila is safest with him rather than with his father and brothers. Yet he’s vicious and at times seems just as
crazy as the rest of them. It’s almost
as if Jethro right now is the lesser of two evils. I have a feeling I know what Jethro’s path
will be as the series continues but he intrigues me in so many ways and I
absolutely LOVE it.
Not So Much
So,
because I loved this book so much this isn’t a not so much for me, but more of
a confusing part for me. This whole
entire plot is based off an ancient deal that has survived centuries. But it’s the new millennium and hundreds of
years later, so I can’t really wrap my head around the fact that this family
doesn’t look at this Weaver – Hawk deal and go this freaking insane. Maybe hundreds of years ago this would fly and
the Weavers were probably evil people but why hasn’t anyone realized that this
is asinine and completely crazy? Okay….I’m done with my rant and maybe I will
get my answer as I continue the series.
To Sum It All Up!
I’ve
loved past Pepper Winters’ books but the beginning of this series has
solidified me as a lifelong fan. My
heart shattered for Nila the moment she realized she realized her fate and how
powerless she was to change things. She
seems to be the only sane person in the house and I could feel her frustration
and anger in every word that Pepper Winters wrote. I couldn’t put this book down and once I was
done I was left with a huge book hangover.
This is another dark mysterious series that I know I will love, hate and
about 100 other emotions all at the same time.
Nila Weaver has been embedded in my heart and I just have to ask myself;
how the hell will all this end?
