Laura’s Review of Corrupt by Penelope Douglas

Synopsis
Erika

I was told that dreams were our heart’s desires. My nightmares, however, became my obsession.

His name is Michael Crist.

My boyfriend’s older brother is like that scary movie that you peek through your hand to watch. He is handsome, strong, and completely terrifying. The star of his college’s basketball team and now gone pro, he’s more concerned with the dirt on his shoe than me.

But I noticed him.

I saw him. I heard him. The things that he did, and the deeds that he hid…For years, I bit my nails, unable to look away.

Now, I’ve graduated high school and moved on to college, but I haven’t stopped watching Michael. He’s bad, and the dirt I’ve seen isn’t content to stay in my head anymore.

Because he’s finally noticed me.

Michael

Her name is Erika Fane, but everyone calls her Rika.

My brother’s girlfriend grew up hanging around my house and is always at our dinner table. She looks down when I enter a room and stills when I am close. I can always feel the fear rolling off of her, and while I haven’t had her body, I know that I have her mind. That’s all I really want anyway.

Until my brother leaves for the military, and I find Rika alone at college.

In my city.

Unprotected.

The opportunity is too good to be true as well as the timing. Because you see, three years ago she put a few of my high school friends in prison, and now they’re out.

We’ve waited. We’ve been patient. And now every last one of her nightmares will come true.

***Corrupt is a stand-alone dark romance with no Cliffy

What I Loved
There are not enough words to describe how much I truly loved this story! From the very second I started reading I was instantly addicted.  The way Michael affects Rika pours off the pages and the minute he enters a room I immediately became tense not being able to tear myself away from the words.  The influence Michael has over Rika’s mind and body was intoxicating and I couldn’t get enough.

The tension between them grabs your heart and doesn’t let go until the very last word in the story.  Rika has somewhat of a wild spirit trapped inside her and is ready to unleash that to the world.  The minute she steps out of the safety of her small town and gated house she realizes she’s in way over head when she learns that Michael lives in the floor above her.  The tension gets pushed up many more notches when she runs into his three friends who seem to be stalking her.

Every time Rika would get upset or excited or her heart was pounding, mine was pounding right along with her.  I absolutely loved the feistiness in her and that whenever she finds herself cornered or being tested, she stands up for herself and finds the strength within her.  There were so many times while reading that I was truly frightened for this girl but she proved she could hold her own when it came to the horsemen and their games.  The aura that Michael emanates is felt the minute he walked into a room, the heat that Rika feels whenever he is around heated me up as well.  The confidence and power he exudes is felt throughout the entire story and is what kept me captivated.  Such an amazing story, written so beautifully that had me on the edge of my seat the entire time!

Not So Much
There wasn’t much I didn’t love about this story obviously since this is a five star review.  I guess my one complaint would be the epilogue.  I completely understood the point of it, and I did end reading the book with a smile on my face.  But I wish there was more about their future and what was going on in their lives and a little less flashback to the past.  I’m not saying this because I didn’t love the story, I guess I just need more Michael and Rika and started experiencing my book hangover the minute it ended.

To Sum It All Up!

Wow, what a remarkable story! The foundation of the story was laid out amazingly, and the writing was great; no fragmented sentences or unfinished thoughts.  The character development was freaking awesome, I loved that the story switched from Michael to Rika so you get the full story.

I loved Rika’s confidence as the plot moved along and how she was able to stand up and fight when she needed to.  Michael oozed raw power, sex, secrets, lies and manipulation and that completely hypnotized me.  For a good part of the book I wasn’t sure if I should hate him or if I should love him and I love books that have me questioning myself.  Michael and Rika’s relationship from the very beginning hooks you and you never want to leave.  I absolutely loved how the story switched from past to present so all the secrets and lies do eventually come out but it’s slow so it keeps the reader guessing and not knowing what’s around the corner.  I absolutely loved this story and NEED to read more of Penelope Douglas’ stories because this was freaking amazing.
