Laura’s Review of Jase (Men of Steel, #1) by M.J. Fields

Synopsis
Book 1 in the Men of Steel Series

Meet Jase Steel, a twenty-two-year-old hot-as-hell, tattooed, and pierced bad boy, who doesn't care what you or anyone else things of him.

But Jase's wild ways and "who gives a f" attitude is about to change. He can't seem to get the beautifully innocent, blonde college girl out of his head. So what she's the cousin of a friend who does not approve? Jase has never exercised self-control when it came to getting a woman, and he wasn't going to start now.

After tricking Carly into “fake dating," it turns out the joke's on him, as Jase falls hard and fast for her. But as painful secrets from his past come to light, Jase will have to man up and bare it all to Carly, even if the ugly truth could tear them apart forever.

What I Loved
I really liked the overall plot of this book, it was definitely original enough for me to peak my interest and it definitely kept me interested while reading.  I like that it took place over a longer period time so we get to see more character development rather than a book that takes place in a span of a couple weeks or months.

I liked that sometimes the story switched over to Jase’s point of view because it definitely kept my attention going and making me want to read more to see how whatever he is going through unfolds and affects Carly’s life.  I love the character of Jase and his character development.  I felt like there was a pretty good foundation built for him, and it was so great to see how much he changed throughout the book.  He definitely went from being the bad boy to a responsible man who really steps up when it comes to his priorities and what his ultimate goals are. It didn’t hurt that he was smoking hot either!

Not So Much
This story was very confusing at times, and I immediately felt like I was dropped into the middle of the plot rather than setting up a foundation for the overall story.  Carly’s thoughts and actions were very scattered and disorganized and while I get that is how humans think most of the time, in a book it has to be more organized to keep the reader’s attention.  Each scene was very choppy and lacked a lot of detail which held me back from being completely engrossed in the story. I had no idea at times who was speaking, or what was going on and it just really threw me off at times and I almost wanted to stop reading.

Also the details were just severely lacking and inconsistent.  There was a ton of description of how beautiful Jase was but very very little description of what Carly looked like and most of the story was from her point of view.  It’s a pet peeve of mine when there is just tons of detail of the male love interest and the same attention is not being paid to the woman at all.  There was no descriptions whatsoever of the supporting characters looks let alone the background details.  I have no clue what Carly's houses look like, or what Jase's tattoo shop looks like.  I barely know what part of the shore this was all taking place, there are hundreds of cities along the Jersey shore so the story should have at least mentioned what town this was all taking place in.  When I feel like I have to make up the backgrounds myself  or infer certain details, it takes me out of the story and I have to really try to imagine what should be around them rather than it being told me.  Plus there were just a lot of grammar mistakes that made me have to go back and re-read sentences because the wording wasn’t right or spelling.

To Sum It All Up!

Overall this was a really good story, the plot was original enough to hold my attention and make me want to find out what happens next.  I just felt like this story was way too choppy and lacking in detail so I couldn’t get completely engrossed in the plot.  At times were was too much dialogue and not enough description or any type of follow through with scenes or explanations of actions being taken.  I didn’t really find Carly that amusing as well, her rambling were just too random and disorganized and a lot of her vocabulary came off cheesy rather than funny or cute.  She’s just not that relatable a character for me, and if there was more of a foundation laid out about her character in the beginning maybe those things would have changed.  The series does intrigue me though and I am interested to see how things progress for the Steel family and to see if the writing style has changed as the series goes on.
