Laura’s Review of Scare Crow (Crow’s Row, #2) by Julie Hockley

If you have read and enjoyed Reviving Izabel (In the Company of Killers, #2) by J.A. Redmerski, Madeleine Abducted (The Estate, #1) by M.S. Willis, and Seduced in the Dark (The Dark Duet, #2) by C.J. Roberts then you will LOVE this book!

Basic Summary
Nineteen-year-old Emily Sheppard is losing her sanity.  Ever since her mob king boyfriend, Cameron Hillard, abandoned her for her own good, Emmy has been attempting to move on with her charmed college student life as if nothing happened.  Now rejected from the underworld and left grieving over Cameron’s alleged death, Emmy realizes she belongs nowhere.  Worse yet, she is now keeping a dangerous secret.

After just a short time with Emily, Cameron has lost control over his world.  As he miserably attempts to return to what is left of his life and unravel the mess he has made of the underworld, Emily’s hate turns to desperation.  She needs to kill the kingpins responsible for Cameron’s death before they come looking for her.  As Cameron secretly observes Emily, he has no idea of the danger he has place her in—or that it may already be too late for him to save her.

Scare Crow is a tale of revenge, terror, and love as Emmy and Cameron embark on separate journeys to face enemies, correct past mistakes, and find their way to their destinies.

First Impressions
Wow, well right off the bat you not only understand the depression that Emily is in, you feel pouring off the pages making you depressed and despondent as well.  From the very first word I could not put this book down and so far my heart is just breaking for Emmy all over again.  Immediately you thrown back into the dark seedy underworld that Cameron lives in, while at the same time watching Emily learning how to survive again.  So far this book is just so heart wrenching and depressing and I love every single second of it.

What I Loved
There is so much I loved about this book; I don’t even know how to begin.  My heart just went out to Emmy immediately and watching her just going through the motions of life without actually living it was just so sad.  I was immediately hooked the minute I opened this book and I just wanted Cameron to come and take Emmy away from her depressing life, to be her hero again and I couldn’t put this story down until that happened (or desperately hoping it would until the very end).

I liked that this story switched back and forth between Cameron and Emily’s point of view, this way you didn’t just get what was going on in Emily’s life you got to see what was going in Cameron’s as well.  I love that Emily and Cameron both disconnected from the world after he faked his death, they both became robots in many ways.

I loved that this book explained more of Cameron’s world, and his relationships with the other drug lords not only in the US but in other countries as well.  It was great to see how things worked in his world because a lot of those things were left out of the first book, he explained the most basic things in Crow’s Row but you never got down and dirty with his world.  It was awesome to see not only his caring and loving side but you got to see his ruthlessness and his business savvy.  I loved being able to see the drug lord at work finally!

Not So Much
I really don’t have a lot of complaints about this book; I loved every single minute of it.  I guess my only con would be that with this talk about underworld and darkness was just a tad corny to me.  I know organized crime is exactly that, organized, and there are many layers and facets to the drug business, but I have a very hard time wrapping my head around all the drug bosses in the country sitting down and listening to a twenty-something year old kid.  I love that Cameron is smart and knows his shit when it comes to the underworld, but at the end of the day he is child compared to some of these other drug bosses yet they listen to him and they have go through him and the rest of the coalition to make decisions.  That was just a little too unrealistic for me I guess.

This Book Was…

Amazing!  I loved it from the very first word to the very last word.  There are tons of twists and turns as which always keeps you on your toes, wanting more.  I couldn't get enough of this book and I am left with a severe book hangover.  There were times my heart was pounding, and there were other times I had tears in my eyes.   I absolutely love Emily and my heart broke for her every time she would try becoming happy and then hitting another wall.  I wanted to take away all her pain and at a certain point I wanted to scream at Cameron at times.  I was desperate to know how all this was going to end for Emily and Cameron and I am counting down the seconds till the third book comes out.
